Downhole Completion Equipment Manufactured

Corrosion Resistant Alloys > White Paper > Downhole Completion Equipment Manufactured

For years, the oil and gas industry has defaulted to writing specifications for downhole completion equipment with precipitation hardening PH bar metallurgies such as 925, 718, 625 and 725 as the primary alloys of choice. Ironically, only 40 to 50% of downhole completion equipment actually needs to be made from bar stock. While PH bar comes with its advantages, it also comes with limitations. It is said that innovation is combining proven ideas to create an even better way of doing things. Corrosion resistant alloys, CRA, headquartered in Houston, Texas combines just in time manufacturing of CRA cold work tubes, the downhole metallurgy of 2550 and experience with downhole completion equipment raw material. Our expertise in these three areas give our customers an innovative way to order completion equipment.

Completion equipment manufactured with CRA2550E improves technical performance, quality and improves delivery, reduces costs, and reduces risk exposure. It is available in longer integral part lengths. 2550 uns no. 6255 is a proven metallurgy in a downhole production environment approved by API 5 CRA, ISO and NACE. It has pitting and corrosion resistance comparable to 625+ and 725 and is capable of being produced to very precise dimensions. Delivery CRA2550E can be manufactured on a just in time basis. Lead times for completion equipment built from CRA2550E cold work tubes are 4 to 14 weeks compared to 10 to 30 weeks for pH bar. This quick delivery is achievable because of our just in time manufacturing process and minimal post mill machining cost. 2550 can be made to exact lengths and quantities. This eliminates the need to scrap drops. It also reduces the need to over order. Additionally, cold work tubes don’t need to be machined as much as bar stock. Processes like turning, boring and honing that are used to turn a bar into a tube aren’t necessary. This results in decreased scrap and less machine hours.

CRA2550E cold work tubes are less susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement than PH bar stock with less machining than PH bar. This results in fewer scrapped and rejected parts, leading to a more reliable on time delivery. CRA2550E is best used for completion equipment that are long length parts equipment with an outside diameter of 4.5 inches and larger.

The most commonly used CRA2550E parts are within the liner hanger assembly Items such as PBRs, TBRS, Seal Bores, tieback extensions, mandrels, blast joints, flow couplings and Shroud casing components within the packer.

Capturing the value of CRA2550E is in your hands when writing your project specifications for your downhole completion equipment, please include CRA2550E in your request to your preferred oil field equipment manufacturer. Please also make sure you request the lengths and integral parts that best suit your well. We can assure you that incorporating CRA2550E into your specifications will help improve technical performance and quality, delivery, cost, and risk.

CRA’s goal is to be the fastest, most reliable quality provider of CRA tubing in the world. To learn more about the technical and commercial benefits of CRA2550E, please contact us at. Corrosion Resistant Alloys.
